How to Use the Concrete Formwork Calculator
Formwork is one of the largest cost drivers in concrete construction. Accurately estimating the contact area allows you to plan plywood quantities, labor hours, and rental or purchase decisions for forming systems.
This calculator supports four common member types. For columns and beams, enter all three dimensions; for slabs and walls, only two are needed. A 10% cutting waste is added to the sheet count. One 4×8 ft (1.22×2.44 m) sheet covers 2.98 m².
Area Formulas by Member Type
- Column: (W + D) × 2 × Height × Qty
- Beam: (W + D×2) × Length × Qty
- Slab: W × L × Qty
- Wall: W × H × 2 × Qty
Frequently Asked Questions
No — this calculator estimates the soffit (underside) area for shoring and deck forms. Top-surface screeding does not require formwork.
Curved formwork requires custom-cut panels and higher waste allowances. For non-rectangular shapes, calculate the curved surface area separately and add a 20–30% waste factor.
