Growth feeding changes factor by stage

Enter the age in months and the factor is chosen for you, 3.0 under four months and 2.0 from four months on. That factor multiplies the resting energy requirement of the current weight to give the daily calorie allowance, and the label energy turns it into cups per day.

The resting energy requirement is RER = 70 × weight in kg^0.75, the formula AAHA and WSAVA both use, so pounds are converted to kilograms first. The puppy factors in wide use are 3.0 from birth to four months and 2.0 from four months until the dog is grown. Current as of October 2026.

No breed growth-curve coefficient is used here. Progress is simply the current weight divided by the expected adult weight you entered, and no official table exists for the age at which a dog counts as grown. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the factor change at four months?

Using a larger factor during the fastest growth phase and lowering it afterwards is the common approach. This calculator applies 3.0 under four months and 2.0 from four months on.

When do I switch to adult maintenance feeding?

The age at which a dog is grown depends on size and breed and there is no official month table. When growth looks finished, change to maintenance feeding with your veterinarian.

How accurate is the growth progress figure?

It is the current weight divided by the expected adult weight you entered, with no breed growth curve behind it. The expected adult weight is itself an estimate, so the error is large.
