How a daily dog food portion is worked out
A portion is worked out in two steps: turn the body weight into a daily calorie figure, then divide that by the energy of the food to get an amount. Enter the weight, a maintenance factor, the kcal per cup printed on the bag and how many meals you serve, and the tool returns a daily amount and a per-meal amount.
The resting energy requirement uses RER = 70 x kg^0.75, the formula AAHA and WSAVA both rely on, and the daily figure is that times a maintenance factor. Because sources differ slightly on the factors, the numbers are shown right in the dropdown and a custom field sits beside it. Weight entered in pounds is converted to kilograms internally, and both are shown. Content is current as of October 2026.
This calculator covers adult maintenance only; it offers no weight loss or growth factors and does not handle illness, pregnancy or nursing. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.
Frequently asked questions
For a neutered adult dog 1.6 is widely used and for an intact adult 1.8. If the dog rests most of the day or is gaining, pick 1.2 to 1.4, and if your veterinarian gave you a factor, type it into the custom field.
No. This calculator covers adult maintenance only and offers no weight loss or growth factors. Feeding toward a goal weight and age-based puppy feeding are handled by separate tools.
Bags print a calorie content statement, usually as kcal per cup and kcal per kilogram. Use the per-cup figure, and measure with the same cup every time so the portion stays consistent.
