Weaning is not a single day but a shift onto solid food spread over several weeks. Pick the species, enter the date of birth, and this calculator shows the actual dates of the window to start weaning and the window to finish it, the age as of today, and which part of the process today falls in.
The windows used are three to four weeks to start and seven to eight weeks to finish for puppies, and three to four weeks to start and eight to ten weeks to finish for kittens. Because this period overlaps the socialization window, AAHA and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) recommend looking at the food change and the environment together. Guidance current as of October 2026.
This tool only does date arithmetic. It does not choose a weaning food, calculate a daily amount or decide how much to soften it, and it does not judge whether weight is normal. The due date belongs to a separate tool that works from the mating date. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
The reported windows differ. Puppies start at three to four weeks and are fully switched over by seven to eight weeks, while kittens start at the same point but finish at eight to ten weeks.
A newborn separated early can struggle to hold its weight and body temperature. Do not wait for the window to arrive. Contact your veterinarian about a replacement formula and feeding intervals.
Seeking the teat as a behavior is not the same as getting nutrition from milk. If solid food intake is good and weight is rising it is usually not a concern, but if weight has stalled, speak with your veterinarian.
