Any pattern, laid out day by day

You Might Also Need

Laying out your own rotation

Write the pattern you actually work and say which day lines up with its first slot, and the roster is laid out from whichever day you choose for as many days as you ask. DDNNOO can be run together, or the slots can be separated with commas so that longer labels such as Night or Standby stay in one piece. The table gives the date, the weekday and the shift, a second table tallies days and share by shift type, and the day the pattern starts over and the longest unbroken run of one shift are reported alongside.

The position is found by taking the day gap between your first laid-out day and the first-slot day, dividing by the pattern length and keeping the remainder, then stepping through the pattern from there. A remainder is always made positive, so the two dates can be entered in either order. Dates are assembled from UTC components and do not drift with a device setting. (As of October 2026)

No list of ready-made rotations is built in, because crewing and cycles differ from one workplace to the next and a fixed list would often fail to match. Finding the date of one single upcoming shift, and working out pay rates or premiums, are not covered here.

Frequently asked questions

Can a shift label be more than one letter?

Yes. Separate the slots with commas, slashes or spaces and each one is read as a single day. With no separator, every character counts as one day.

What if I do not know the first-slot date?

Take any day you remember, work out where that shift sits in the pattern, and count back from it to the day matching the first slot.

Why is there no list of patterns?

Crewing and rotation cycles differ from one workplace to the next, so a fixed list would often fail to match. The pattern you work is taken from you instead.
