How to Use the DIY Interior Material Budget Calculator

Enter the floor area in square feet, then select the flooring type, wallpaper grade, and whether you are tiling one or two bathrooms. The calculator shows individual line items and a total budget with a 10% waste buffer included.

Material Cost Estimates Used

Vinyl/peel-and-stick flooring runs about $1–$2 per sq ft. Laminate averages $2–$4, hardwood $5–$8, and tile $3–$5. Standard peel-and-stick or prepasted wallpaper costs roughly $0.40–$0.60 per sq ft, while premium non-woven options run $0.80–$1.00. Bathroom tile (including grout and adhesive) averages about $5–$7 per sq ft installed via DIY.

What Is Not Included

Labor, underlayment, primer, adhesives beyond tile setting, tools, and fixtures (faucets, vanities) are not included in this estimate. For a full renovation budget, add 30–50% on top of material costs if hiring a contractor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I include the waste allowance?

Yes — always plan for at least 10% extra material to cover cutting waste, damaged pieces, and future repairs. For patterned tiles or diagonal flooring, add 15–20% instead.

Is wallpaper easier than painting?

Modern peel-and-stick wallpaper is DIY-friendly and removable — great for renters. Traditional wallpaper requires more skill but looks more premium. Painting is faster for large areas but covers textures differently.
