Marathon Pace Calculator Guide

Knowing your required pace before race day is essential for a successful finish. This calculator takes your goal finish time and tells you the exact pace per kilometer and per mile you need to maintain, along with projected split times at every major checkpoint.

How Pace Is Calculated

Pace (min:sec per km) = Total goal time in seconds ÷ Distance in km. For example, a 4-hour full marathon goal gives 14,400 ÷ 42.195 ≈ 341 seconds = 5:41 per km.

Common Marathon Goal Paces

Sub-3 hours requires 4:15/km. Sub-3:30 needs 4:58/km. Sub-4 needs 5:41/km. Sub-5 needs 7:06/km. Enter your specific goal time to get the exact figures for your race.

Why Split Times Matter

Going out too fast in the early miles is one of the most common marathon mistakes. Printing or saving the split table as a pace band and checking your time at each checkpoint helps you stay on target throughout the race.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I enter an unrealistic goal time?

The calculator will still compute a mathematically correct pace, but it may be unrealistically fast. The current men's marathon world record is approximately 2:00:35 (about 2:51/km). Use a realistic goal based on your training times.

Can I use this for trail running?

Yes, the calculator works for any race distance on any surface. For trail running, set your goal time based on the expected difficulty and elevation gain rather than road race comparisons.
