What Is Body Fat Percentage?
Body fat percentage measures the proportion of fat in your total body weight. Unlike BMI, which only considers height and weight, body fat percentage gives a more accurate picture of body composition. This calculator uses the US Navy method, developed by the US Navy to estimate body fat from simple tape measurements — no special equipment required.
According to the American Council on Exercise (ACE), average body fat for men is 18–24% and for women 25–31%. Athletes typically maintain 6–13% (men) or 14–20% (women). High body fat, especially above 25% for men and 32% for women, is associated with increased health risks including cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
Frequently Asked Questions
The US Navy method estimates body fat percentage using waist, neck, and hip (females) circumferences along with height. It's widely used because it requires only a tape measure and is reasonably accurate for most people.
Measure waist at the navel level, neck at the narrowest point, and hip (females) at the widest point. Breathe out naturally before measuring to get consistent results.
The US Navy formula has an accuracy range of ±3–4%. For clinical precision, DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing provide more accurate results, but this method is excellent for tracking progress over time.
