How to Use the Soup Salinity Calculator

Enter your broth volume in ml, current salinity percentage, and your target salinity, then select which seasoning you plan to add. The calculator shows the required amount in grams for salt or milliliters for soy sauce, along with the spoon equivalent.

General salinity guidelines: light soups 0.7–0.9%, hearty stews 1.0–1.2%, low-sodium soups 0.5–0.7%. Instant noodle broth runs around 1.5–2.0%. This calculator only works for increasing salinity — if your soup is too salty, dilute it by adding water.

One teaspoon of salt is about 6g. One tablespoon of soy sauce is about 15ml. When adding small amounts, add a little at a time and taste as you go rather than adding everything at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know my soup's salinity without a meter?

Taste is your best guide. A soup that tastes bland is usually under 0.5%, pleasant at 0.7–0.9%, and noticeably salty above 1.2%. An inexpensive home salinity meter can give you an exact reading if you want precision.

Does adding ingredients change salinity?

Yes — adding ingredients that release water (like tofu, zucchini, or leafy greens) dilutes the broth and lowers salinity. Always re-check the seasoning after adding ingredients that contain significant moisture.
