How to Use the Salt & Soy Sauce Seasoning Calculator

Getting saltiness right is one of the most important skills in cooking. Each dish type has an optimal salinity level — soups around 0.9%, stews around 1.3%, and stir-fries around 1.1%. This calculator converts target saltiness and ingredient weight into gram and teaspoon measurements for salt and soy sauce.

Salt has ~99% sodium chloride content; soy sauce is approximately 16% salinity. Never add all the seasoning at once — start with half, taste, and adjust gradually to avoid over-salting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many grams is 1 teaspoon of salt?

About 5g for table salt. Coarse salt has larger crystals, so the same volume weighs about 4g.

Does soy sauce type affect the calculation?

Yes. Regular soy sauce is ~14–16% salinity; Korean soup soy sauce (guk-ganjang) is ~18–20% and saltier. This calculator uses 16%. For soup soy sauce, reduce the amount by 10–20%.

What if the dish turns out too salty?

Add water or more unseasoned ingredients to dilute. For soups and stews, adding a raw potato can absorb some salt.
