How to Use the Coffee Brew Ratio Calculator

This calculator finds the right coffee-to-water ratio for your brew method. The same beans taste very different depending on the ratio — too little coffee and it tastes weak; too much and it turns bitter or sour.

Recommended Ratios by Method

Pour over and drip: 1:15–17. French press: 1:12–14. Espresso: 1:2. Cold brew concentrate: 1:8. AeroPress: 1:12. This calculator uses the midpoint for each method.

Ratio Adjustment Tips

For a stronger cup, use less water (lower ratio). For a lighter cup, use more water. Light roasts generally pair well with slightly more water, while dark roasts can handle a lower ratio without becoming bitter.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the standard drip coffee ratio?

The standard is 1:15–17. Use 1:15 for stronger, 1:17 for lighter coffee.

How much coffee do I use for espresso?

Single shot: 7–9g. Double shot: 14–18g. Standard ratio is 1:2 (twice as much water as coffee by weight).

Why does cold brew need so much coffee?

Cold brew is a concentrate steeped in cold water for 12–24 hours. The 1:8 ratio makes a strong concentrate you then dilute before drinking.
