🔂Plank hold improvement planner

Weeks to your target hold, plus per-set hold times

You Might Also Need

How many weeks until your plank hold reaches the target

The Army Fitness Test scores a timed plank hold rather than a repetition count, so a core plan built on reps no longer matches the event you are graded on. Enter your current max hold, the hold you want, and how many seconds per week you expect to add. You get the number of weeks, a week-by-week target table, the halfway mark for each target so you can check yourself mid-hold, and a set hold time that divides the target across your training sets.

Everything here is arithmetic. Weeks are the remaining seconds divided by your assumed weekly gain, rounded up. The set hold time is the target divided by the number of sets and rounded up, so the sets always add up to at least the target. Weekly gain and set count are values you choose, not an official prescription, which is why both are input boxes (as of October 2026).

This page does not score you. Army Fitness Test passing is 60 points per event and 300 points total, with 350 points total for 21 combat military occupational specialties, but published per-event point cutoffs disagree between sources, so no scoring table is built in here. The weekly targets are not a forecast either: they extend the assumption you typed, and real progress is not linear. Stop and get checked if a hold brings on low-back or shoulder pain.

Frequently asked questions

What weekly gain should I enter?

There is no official figure, so no default is filled in. Average how many seconds you actually added over the last few weeks and use that.

Why does it show a halfway mark?

A plank is a single long effort with no reps to count. Knowing the halfway time lets you check mid-hold whether you are on pace instead of guessing.

Will my hold really grow by the same amount every week?

No. The table simply extends the number you entered. Re-measure every two or three weeks and update the assumption.
