US Housing Assistance: Who Qualifies and How Much?
The US federal government provides several housing assistance programs for low-income households. The most widely known is the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) program, administered by local Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) under HUD oversight.
Income Eligibility Categories
Eligibility is based on Area Median Income (AMI) for your location and household size:
- Extremely Low Income: ≤30% AMI — highest priority for assistance
- Very Low Income: ≤50% AMI — eligible for most federal programs
- Low Income: ≤80% AMI — eligible for some programs
How the Voucher Works
Voucher recipients pay approximately 30% of their adjusted monthly income toward rent. The voucher covers the difference between your rent share and the landlord's rent, up to the local Payment Standard set by the PHA.
How to Apply
Contact your local Public Housing Authority to apply. Note that waiting lists are often long — sometimes years — due to high demand. Apply as early as possible and check if you qualify for priority status.
