Light Angle Makes or Breaks a 3D Mockup

The same 3D model can look drastically different depending on where the light comes from. The key light creates the primary highlight and shadow structure, the fill light softens the shadow side, and the shadow setup grounds the product naturally on its surface.

This guide recommends lighting setups for five common shapes — flat, box, cylinder, sphere, and irregular. Light behaves differently on each surface type, so no single formula works for all of them.

Lighting Principles by Shape

Flat products lose all dimensionality under front lighting, so a 45° side light is needed to bring out subtle shading. Box shapes need crisp edges to keep packaging text legible, so a top-left 45° key with an added rim light works best. Cylinders and spheres rely on a large softbox so light flows naturally along the curved surface.

Adjusting for Material

Glossy materials reflect highlights strongly, so lower the fill light below the table value to avoid blown-out reflections. Matte materials reflect much less, so a slightly stronger fill still reads naturally.
