Steel & Galvanized Pipe Weight Calculator Guide
Enter the pipe's outer diameter (OD), wall thickness, length in feet, and quantity. The calculator shows unit weight, per-piece weight, and total weight in both kg and lb. Standard NPS pipe presets are included for quick selection.
Weight Formula
Weight (kg/m) = π × (OD − T) × T × density ÷ 100. OD and T are in mm, density for carbon steel is 7.85 g/cm³. For example, NPS 2" (60.33mm OD × 3.91mm wall) weighs about 5.44 kg/m (3.65 lb/ft).
Galvanized vs. Black Steel
Galvanized (zinc-coated) pipe is used for outdoor, wet, or exposed installations to prevent rust. Black steel is used for gas lines and indoor applications where additional corrosion protection is added later. The weight difference due to the zinc coating is negligible in practice.
Frequently Asked Questions
NPS 2" (OD 60.33mm, T 3.91mm) weighs about 5.44 kg/m. At 20 ft (6.1m): 5.44 × 6.1 ≈ 33.2 kg (73.1 lb).
NPS designations are nominal — they originally referred to the approximate bore (ID), but OD dimensions were standardized to enable consistent fittings and couplings across manufacturers. The outer dimension is fixed; wall thickness varies by schedule.
