US law (10 U.S.C. ยง 651) requires all service members to complete an 8-year military service obligation. After active duty ends, the remaining time is typically served in the Selected Reserve (with a unit) or the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR).
Selected Reserve (years 1โ4 after discharge): Assigned to a Reserve unit, drill monthly, receive pay and benefits.
IRR (years 4โ8): No unit assignment, no drill, no pay โ but subject to annual muster and recall to active duty in a national emergency.
