Why the same cup weighs differently
"Two cups a day" on a bag or a blog hides a wide range: the cup volume is fixed, but kibble size and density differ by product, so the real weight varies a lot. This tool never guesses density. You weigh one level cup of the food you actually use and enter that number.
The math is simple proportion, grams divided by cup weight or cups multiplied by cup weight, and the formula used is printed with the result. Enter meals per day and you also get the per-meal amount in grams, ounces and cups. No official density table for pet foods exists, so re-measure whenever you change food. Figures here are current as of October 2026.
This tool does not decide how much to feed. Daily calories come from the RER formula that AAHA and WSAVA both use, which belongs to a separate calculator; this page only converts units. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.
Frequently asked questions
Put the empty measuring cup on a kitchen scale, zero it, level off the kibble and read the weight. Weighing two or three times and averaging reduces error.
Yes. Kibble size and density change the weight of the same cup, so measure again whenever you change food.
Cups are rarely used for wet food because of its water content. This tool assumes dry kibble; for wet food use the grams printed on the can or pouch.
