Compare dry and wet food on a dry matter basis

You Might Also Need

Strip out the water, then compare

Label percentages include water, so a dry food at 10% moisture always looks richer than a canned food at 78% when you read the numbers straight. This tool converts each labeled percentage to a dry matter basis so the two foods sit on the same footing, and if you enter the ounces of dry food you feed it also returns the ounces of wet food carrying the same dry matter.

How it is calculated

Converting to a dry matter basis is the standard way to compare foods with different moisture, and the guaranteed analysis format follows the labeling framework used by AAFCO. Divide the labeled percentage by 100 minus moisture, then multiply by 100. The applied formula is printed with the result. Information here is current as of October 2026.

Matching dry matter does not make energy or the remaining nutrients equal, and daily calorie planning is not supported here. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.

Frequently asked questions

Why do canned foods look lower on the label?

Water adds to the total weight. Converting to a dry matter basis removes that water so both foods can be compared fairly.

Which nutrient should I enter?

Use the same nutrient from both labels, such as crude protein. Entering two different nutrients makes the comparison meaningless.

Can I feed the wet amount it gives me?

It matches dry matter only. Energy may differ, so set the amount you actually feed with your veterinarian on a calorie basis.
