How a wet and dry mix is worked out

Mixed feeding means two foods share the calories for the day. Enter the total daily calories, the share the wet food should carry and the energy printed on each product, and the tool returns how much of each to serve plus the total weight. A table sweeps the share from 0 to 100% so you can see how the total moves.

Each food takes its share of the calories, and that share is divided by its own energy figure to become a weight. The formula is printed in the results, and because energy differs by product, both figures are entered from the label rather than assumed. The daily calorie total is taken as given from the RER based method that AAHA and WSAVA both rely on. Content is current as of October 2026.

The tool never recalculates the daily calorie total; it only splits what you enter, and it makes no judgment about nutrient balance or whether two products suit each other. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem.

Frequently asked questions

Where does the total daily calorie figure come from?

Use the daily figure from a feeding calculator. This tool never recalculates calories from body weight; it only splits the total you enter between two foods.

Why does the total weight change when I move the share?

Wet and dry foods hold very different calories per ounce. Raising the wet share means more weight is needed for the same calories, so the total grows. The table shows the whole 0 to 100% sweep at once.

Is mixing two foods in one day fine?

If both are complete diets, matching the calories is what matters. When switching foods or moving the share a lot, change it over several days, and check with your veterinarian first if there is a medical condition.
