How to use the crate size chooser
Enter body length from the nose tip to the base of the tail, sitting height from the floor to the top of the head, and shoulder width at the widest point. The same clearance is added to all three measurements to give the minimum inside dimensions of the crate.
The clearance is not filled in for you because there is no single official crate standard. Allowed travel dimensions vary by airline and product sizes vary by maker, so as of October 2026 no unified conversion chart exists. Enter the figure from the airline you are booking or from the product page, and the result stays inside that standard.
The tool works on inside dimensions only. It does not judge outside dimensions, ventilation or latch requirements, or whether a crate is allowed in the cabin. This tool is for reference only and does not replace veterinary care. Contact your veterinarian right away if you notice symptoms or suspect a problem, such as repeated panting or vomiting during travel.
Frequently asked questions
Allowed cabin and cargo dimensions, and the clearance each carrier wants, differ by airline and even by aircraft. You enter the clearance yourself so you can use the numbers from the airline you are booking.
Measure from the tip of the nose to the base of the tail while the animal is standing. Measuring to the tip of the tail inflates the number and pushes you into a needlessly large crate.
This tool uses the height from the floor to the top of the head while sitting, because a crate is sized so the head does not touch the roof in that position.
