How to use the product sampling conversion calculator

A product sampling or influencer seeding program should be judged by how many recipients actually paid, not by how many units you shipped. Enter the number of samples distributed and the purchases that followed to get your sampling conversion rate, then add cost per sample and average purchase amount to see total sample cost, sample cost per purchase and revenue.

Sampling conversion rate is purchases divided by samples distributed. It is a ratio of output to volume, not a growth rate, so 100% is closer to a ceiling than a target. If one recipient buys more than once, purchases can exceed the sample count, and the result label notes why the rate went above 100%.

Cost per sample should include the product, packaging and shipping you actually paid. Comparing sample cost per purchase with the average purchase amount tells you whether the program paid for itself on first orders alone. For replenishment products, first-order value understates the return, so you can run the calculation a second time with expected lifetime value in the purchase amount field. What counts as a good rate depends on the category, the seeding channel and the audience, so compare against your own prior campaigns instead of an industry average.

Frequently asked questions

How long a window should I count purchases in?

Pick a window that matches how long buyers normally take after trying a sample and count only orders inside it. With no window, unrelated purchases get mixed in and inflate the rate.

How do I exclude people who would have bought anyway?

This calculator has no control group, so the result is not incremental. To measure lift, track the purchase rate of a comparable group that received no sample and compare the two.
