How to use the organic CTR by rank calculator

Published tables claiming a fixed click-through rate for position one vary enormously between studies, industries, measurement periods and the shape of the results page itself, including AI summaries, featured snippets, map and shopping blocks and the number of ads above the links. Figures several times apart are quoted for the same position, so this calculator contains no rank-to-CTR table at all. It takes the CTR your own property actually recorded in Search Console and converts it into clicks.

Open the Search Console performance report, filter to the keyword, and read the average position together with the CTR recorded at that position. Enter those as the current values, then enter a CTR your site actually recorded at the target position, either from a period when it ranked there or from a comparable keyword on the same site that ranks there now.

The results show monthly clicks at both positions, the difference, and the growth rate. That growth rate divides the difference between the two click figures on screen by the current click figure, so everything reconciles with what is displayed. Add a value per click to convert the gain into revenue. Remember that search volume is itself an estimate, and that a better position does not always carry its old CTR when the results page layout changes.

Frequently asked questions

What if I have no CTR data for the target position?

Use Search Console data from a period when the page did rank there, or borrow the CTR of a comparable keyword on the same site that already ranks at that position. Averages from third-party tables scatter too widely to be useful.

Can the position improve without the CTR improving?

Yes. When an AI summary or featured snippet occupies the top of the page, the share of clicks reaching the first blue link falls. Tracking measured CTR is safer than assuming rank movement carries clicks with it.
