How to Calculate Grout Material Needed

Running out of grout mid-project can cause color mismatches if the dye lot changes. Buying too much wastes money. This calculator gives you an accurate estimate based on your tile size and joint dimensions.

The formula calculates total joint length per square foot, multiplies by joint cross-section, and converts to weight using grout density. Smaller tiles dramatically increase the amount of grout needed.

The recommended purchase quantity includes a 20% buffer for overfilling, mixing waste, and future spot repairs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sanded vs. unsanded grout — which do I need?

Use unsanded grout for joints under 1/8 inch and sanded grout for joints 1/8 inch or wider. Sanded grout resists shrinkage in wider joints, preventing cracking over time.

Do smaller tiles really need that much more grout?

Yes. A 4×4 inch tile layout has about three times more joint length per square foot than a 12×12 layout, so it needs roughly three times the grout. This is why mosaic tile projects use so much grout.

How long can I store leftover grout?

Sealed, dry cement grout lasts about 12 months from the manufacture date. Once opened, reseal tightly and store in a cool, dry place. Keep away from moisture — it will harden and become unusable.
