How to Calculate Your Pet's Daily Food Amount
Feeding the right amount is one of the most important aspects of pet care. Overfeeding leads to obesity; underfeeding causes nutritional deficiency. The scientifically accepted method uses RER (Resting Energy Requirement) and MER (Maintenance Energy Requirement).
The Calculation Formula
RER (kcal/day) = 70 × body weight (kg)^0.75. MER = RER × activity factor. For adult dogs: low activity 1.4, moderate 1.6, high 1.8. Puppies use 3.0; seniors use 1.2. For cats, apply a 0.8 correction to RER before multiplying by the activity factor (low 1.0, moderate 1.2, high 1.4). Divide MER by the food's calorie density to get grams per day.
Important Notes
This calculator provides a starting reference. Individual needs vary based on neutering status, breed characteristics, and health conditions. Splitting the daily amount into 2–3 meals promotes better digestion. Consult your veterinarian when setting or adjusting feeding amounts for the first time.
FAQ
RER = 70 × weight^0.75, multiplied by an activity factor gives MER. Divide by the food's calorie density (kcal/g) to get daily grams.
Not always — manufacturer recommendations are averages. Your pet's individual needs may differ based on metabolism and activity.
