How the clothing purge count is worked out
Clearing a wardrobe stalls because the question "how many pieces have to go" never turns into a number. This tool takes what you own now across six groups — tops, bottoms, outerwear, dresses and suits, shoes, and bags and accessories — together with the target you set yourself, then returns the items to remove per group, the total to remove, the total kept, and the share of your wardrobe that goes.
How the math runs
Items to remove in a group is the owned count minus the target, held at 0 when the target is higher than what you own. The total to remove is the sum of those figures, and the total kept is everything owned minus that sum. The share divides the total to remove by the total owned and is shown to one decimal. Counts must be whole numbers and blank boxes count as 0. Figures are current as of October 2026.
Limits and disclaimer
No officially recommended number of garments per group is offered here. The counts that circulate in this area are not a published standard; they depend on your job, your climate and how you live. Set the targets yourself. The tool does not choose which pieces to keep and produces no score — it only counts items.
