How to use the extended unemployment benefits calculator

Extended Benefits add weeks to an unemployment claim after the regular weeks run out, but only while the state is in an active trigger period. Enter your weekly benefit amount, the tier your state is running and the weeks you expect to claim to see the likely total.

Legal basis - Extended Benefits come from the Federal-State Extended Unemployment Compensation Act of 1970, set out in the note to 26 U.S.C. §3304, which provides up to 13 additional weeks and up to 20 weeks in a state that meets the high unemployment trigger. Payments normally match the regular weekly benefit amount. Whether the programme is switched on depends on the state insured unemployment rate, not on personal hardship. Figures are current as of September 2026, and your state may differ, so check with your state workforce agency.

Korea runs a different model, an individual extension of up to 60 days paid at 70 percent of the regular daily benefit and granted case by case to claimants in hardship, so there is no exact United States counterpart to that hardship test. This calculator is for reference only and is not legal advice. Consult a licensed attorney or your state workforce agency about your specific situation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get Extended Benefits just because I am struggling financially?

No. Extended Benefits are switched on by statewide unemployment triggers rather than by individual hardship, so the programme is either available in your state or it is not. A few states also run their own Additional Benefits programmes with separate rules.

Do Extended Benefits pay less than my regular claim?

Usually the weekly amount is the same as the regular claim. Some state rules and work search requirements are stricter during the extension, so check the conditions attached before relying on the full number of weeks.
