When an assignment notification takes effect
When a receivable is assigned, the person who owes the money keeps paying the original creditor until they are properly told otherwise. Enter the date the notification was sent and received, whether it was authenticated, and the date of any competing notice, and this tool shows when the account debtor must start paying the assignee and how the notices line up in time.
UCC §9-406(a) lets an account debtor discharge its obligation by paying the assignor until it receives a notification, authenticated by the assignor or the assignee, that the amount due has been assigned and that payment is to be made to the assignee. Receipt is defined by UCC §1-202(e), so the delivery date controls rather than the mailing date. An important difference from systems that rank assignees by who gave notice first: under UCC §9-322 priority between competing secured parties and assignees generally follows the order of filing or perfection, so an earlier notice does not by itself win. Article 9 is state law and the enacted text varies, and the rules described are those in force as of September 2026. Days in transit are counted from the day after sending.
