Drying times and minimum recoat intervals printed on a technical data sheet are measured at a fixed reference temperature, usually 77 F. When the job site is colder the coating cures far more slowly, so enter the published time, the reference temperature and the actual air temperature to get a corrected schedule.
The correction follows the familiar rule that reaction rate roughly doubles for every 18 F rise. Ten degrees Fahrenheit below the reference gives a factor near 1.5, eighteen degrees below doubles the time, and thirty-six degrees below quadruples it. If the manufacturer publishes a low-temperature cure table or a winter-grade hardener, use those figures instead.
The tool also returns the dew point from air temperature and relative humidity using the Magnus formula. Industry practice requires the steel surface to sit at least 5 F above the dew point; below that, invisible condensation forms and leads to adhesion failure and early delamination, so the verdict field flags the condition as a hold.
Remember that recoat windows have a maximum as well as a minimum. Fully cured epoxies lose intercoat adhesion once the window closes, and sweeping or abrading the surface becomes necessary. Use these numbers for scheduling and confirm the final go-ahead against the product data sheet and the inspector on site.
