Framing a wall with dimensional lumber studs is one of the most common tasks in US residential and light commercial construction. US wall framing almost always uses 16 in or 24 in on-center (o.c.) spacing. Because a stud sits at both ends of the wall as well as at every spacing interval in between, the stud count is always one more than the number of spacing intervals — a 16 ft wall at 16 in o.c. needs 13 studs, not 12. Remember that a nominal 2x4 actually measures 1.5 in x 3.5 in after milling and drying, and a 2x6 finishes at 1.5 in x 5.5 in — always use these actual dimensions when planning wall thickness.
This calculator gives a straight stud count for a continuous wall run; it does not add extra studs for corners, T-intersections, window and door king/jack studs, or blocking, all of which add to the real material list.
