How to use the forklift residual capacity calculator
A forklift rating only applies at one load center. In the United States counterbalanced trucks are almost always rated at a 24 inch load center, and OSHA 1910.178 requires that the data plate stay legible so operators can check the rating before every lift. When a load is deeper than 48 inches its center of gravity moves out along the forks, the forward tipping moment grows, and the truck can safely carry less than the number printed on the nameplate.
The calculation balances moments about the front axle: allowable capacity = rated capacity ร (axle to rated load center) รท (axle to actual load center). The distance from the front axle to the fork face is typically 16 to 20 inches depending on the model. The simple ratio shown alongside it ignores the axle distance and is more conservative, so use that figure when the axle dimension is unknown.
Nothing here replaces the data plate. Attachments such as fork extensions, clamps and side shifters add their own weight and shift the center of gravity, which derates the truck again, and manufacturers publish separate capacity charts for raised mast heights and for each attachment. OSHA also requires that the data plate be revised in writing by the manufacturer whenever an attachment is added. Treat this result as a planning check, then confirm the rating on the truck and with your safety supervisor before lifting.
