How to use the blasting abrasive consumption calculator

Abrasive volume is usually the line item that moves a blasting bid the most. Enter the area to be blasted and the consumption rate tied to your surface prep grade, and this tool returns total abrasive in pounds, the short ton equivalent, the number of bags to order, and an estimated blasting duration when you supply a production rate.

The prep grades follow the SSPC-SP scale, cross-referenced with the older NACE numbers. Consumption climbs steadily as you move from brush-off (SP 7 / NACE 4) through commercial blast (SP 6 / NACE 3) to near-white (SP 10 / NACE 2) and white metal (SP 5 / NACE 1), because each step removes more of the existing mill scale, rust and coating.

The default rates describe expendable coal slag abrasive and are planning figures only. Real consumption varies with abrasive type and mesh size, nozzle diameter and pressure, standoff distance and the condition of the existing coating, so enter your own measured rate whenever a test patch is available.

For recyclable steel grit or shot running in an enclosed recovery unit, enter the recycle rate so only the make-up abrasive lost to breakdown is counted. Budget separately for spent abrasive disposal and dust control, and have confined-space or lead-containing coating removal reviewed against the applicable safety and environmental rules.
