How Speedrun Splits Work

Speedrun pacing breaks a goal time into meaningful checkpoints (splits) and assigns a target time to each one. Even mode simply divides total time by segment count, but real games include boss fights, traversal, and item collection - so weighted splits are usually more realistic. A 1h30m run across 6 segments yields 15 min each in even mode, but assigning a weight of 2 to a tough boss segment expands that section while shrinking the others to keep the total constant.

Pair with LiveSplit and Tracking Tools

Feed these target splits into LiveSplit, Splits.io, or any timer that supports per-segment goals. Comparing your live pace against the targets reveals where you are gaining or losing time. Most newcomers start with even splits, then switch to weighted mode after 50-100 runs once they have real data about which segments deserve more buffer.

Setting Realistic Targets

Rather than chasing the world record from day one, set a goal 5-10% faster than your personal average to stay motivated. Keep weights within a 1 to 10 range and avoid extreme ratios like 1 vs 10, which produce unrealistic pacing.

FAQ

Is using too many segments a bad idea?

Close to 100 segments gives precision but is hard to monitor mid-run. Most runners stick to 5-20 splits for clarity.

Do weight values need to sum to 100?

No. Weights are auto-normalized, so values like 1, 2, 1, 3 work fine and the total time always matches your goal.

What if I enter 0 or a negative weight?

Non-positive weights are treated as 1 automatically, preventing zero-length segments.
