How to Use the Pokemon Type Matchup Calculator
The single biggest factor in a Pokemon battle is type matchups. A move of the same power can deal up to four times the damage — or be completely nullified — depending on how well it matches up against the opponent's type. This calculator lets you pick your move's type and the defending Pokemon's type (including dual types) to instantly see the real damage multiplier and effectiveness rating.
For dual-type Pokemon, the multipliers against each type are multiplied together to get the final result. For example, an Electric move against a Water/Ground Pokemon deals 2x against Water but is completely blocked (0x) by Ground, so the overall damage ends up at zero. These combinations trip up a lot of players in practice, so checking them ahead of time can save you from picking the wrong move at a critical moment.
The type chart here accurately covers every combination across all 18 types, so once you know (or guess) the opponent's type, you can immediately tell which of your moves will hit hardest. It's also a handy way to spot weaknesses in your own team before ranked battles or tournaments.
Frequently Asked Questions
Against a dual-type Pokemon that's weak to your move on both types, the multipliers stack to up to 4x (2x times 2x). If both types resist it, it can drop as low as 0.25x. If either type is immune (0x), the total damage is always 0 regardless of the other type.
Certain type pairs are designed to fully block damage, like Normal and Fighting moves against Ghost, or Electric moves against Ground. Knowing these immunities ahead of time helps you avoid picking a move that does nothing.
