How to use the multi-set interval timing calculator
Instead of timing a single block of work and rest, this page takes the number of sets and the rest between them, so you get the clock time for a whole session of stacked blocks. You also choose whether the final round rest counts inside each set, which is the usual reason a published total time and a real timer disagree.
The arithmetic is a plain sum. One set equals rounds times work plus the number of rests times rest, and the total equals the set times added up plus the rest between sets applied one time fewer than the number of sets. The sum of work alone is then reported as your total work exposure, along with work as a share of the total. The original Tabata protocol used 20 seconds of work and 10 seconds of rest for seven to eight rounds, took roughly four minutes, ran at about 170% of maximal oxygen uptake and was performed on a cycle ergometer (current as of October 2026). Bodyweight versions differ in both equipment and intensity, and this page publishes no figures for how much fitness improves.
Safety note: this structure is high-intensity work. If you have cardiovascular disease or high blood pressure, are older, or have been away from training for a long time, talk to a clinician before starting. Stop immediately if you feel chest pressure, dizziness or pain. The calculator works out the timing structure only; it does not prescribe intensity or recommend a protocol.
Frequently asked questions
That happens when you exclude the final round rest from the set. Switch to counting it inside the set and all eight rounds of 20 and 10 seconds add up to 240 seconds, which is four minutes.
No. The original ran on a cycle ergometer at about 170% of maximal oxygen uptake. Only the timing structure matches; the equipment and the intensity are different, so it is not the same workout.
The improvement percentages that get quoted differ between sources, so no single reliable number could be chosen. This page calculates times and ratios only and publishes no effect figures.
