How to use the rowing stroke composition calculator
Enter a stroke rate and a session time and the tool reports how many strokes that piece contains and how long one stroke cycle lasts. Feed it the drive to recovery ratio you measured yourself and it splits that cycle into drive seconds and recovery seconds. Add a distance per stroke and the same stroke count converts into metres.
The maths is arithmetic. Total strokes are stroke rate times minutes, rounded down, and the cycle is 60 divided by the rate. The drive phase is the cycle times the drive share divided by the sum of both shares. Time is entered as separate minute and second fields and seconds are limited to 0 through 59. Erg distance is reported in metres because the machines themselves are metric (checked October 2026).
No recommended stroke rate appears here. The useful range shifts with distance and purpose and no authoritative recommendation is published. The 500 m split and pace are not outputs of this page either, and it does not cover drag factor, foot stretcher position or technique correction.
Frequently asked questions
This page does not suggest a rate. The useful range shifts with distance and purpose and no authoritative recommendation is published, so it only works out the composition of the rate you enter.
This page is for stroke composition only. It reports stroke count, cycle length and the drive and recovery seconds, and it does not output pace or splits.
Measure it from the drive time on your monitor or by counting video frames. The page never recommends a ratio and splits the cycle using only the two numbers you type.
