How to use the long run split pace calculator

Enter the total distance, your goal time and how many segments you want to break the run into, and the table gives you a target time for every segment plus the cumulative clock time at each checkpoint. The distance is not locked to the marathon, so you can plan a 10K race, a half, a 20-mile long run or a single climb on a trail course.

The math is deliberately plain. The even strategy divides the goal time equally. The negative strategy starts the first segment 2% slower than even pace and ramps linearly to 2% faster on the last segment; the positive strategy does the reverse. Segment times are then normalised so that they add up to exactly the goal time you typed, and the calculator prints that check in seconds. Values are current as of October 2026 and follow no governing body's recommended strategy.

The limits are real. The 2% ramp is only a reference figure used to separate the three strategies, not an officially recommended number, and this page does not conclude that any one strategy produces a faster finish. Course conditions such as elevation, wind and aid stations are not modelled, and segments of unequal length are not supported.

Frequently asked questions

Is a negative split the better strategy?

This calculator does not conclude that any strategy is faster. It shows the three sets of segment times side by side, and the choice depends on the course and on your own experience.

Can I use segments of different lengths?

No, that is not supported. The total distance is divided equally by the number of segments. To look at one climb on its own, enter that segment's distance as the total distance and calculate again.

Where does the 2% ramp come from?

It is not an official recommendation. It is the reference figure this calculator uses to separate the three strategies, and the ramp runners actually use varies by person and by course.
