This is not a validated phonics screener
What this page does is tidy up the results of items you wrote yourself, at home or in a classroom. It is not a standardized phonics assessment, so it never declares a stage and never maps a result onto an age or a grade. Instead it lines up the accuracy across six skill areas and flags the first area in the teaching sequence that falls below your own bar as the place to practice next.
The order and the bar
The areas run from letter sounds through short-vowel words, consonant digraphs and blends, long vowels with silent e, vowel teams and finally r-controlled vowels. That is a common teaching sequence, but programs differ and it is not the only defensible order. There is no established figure for what counts as mastered either, so the bar is an input, and accuracy exactly equal to the bar counts as met.
Limits
Every area is assumed to have the same number of items. Hearing and separating sounds, and reading fluency, are not part of this check at all.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. It is not a validated screener, only a tidy-up of items you wrote yourself. Do not read a stage or a grade into it. Use it to see which area is weakest.
It follows a common teaching sequence that runs from letter sounds through short vowels, digraphs, long vowels, vowel teams and r-controlled vowels. Programs order these differently, and this is not the only correct order.
There is no established figure. Classrooms often work around 80%, but raise the bar when your items are easy and lower it when they are hard.
