Section TDNs judged against cutoffs you supply
A TestDaF score report does not give one overall mark. It gives a TDN for reading, listening, writing and speaking separately, and German universities usually set their entry condition section by section, such as TDN 4 in all four. Averaging the sections would hide whether that condition is met. The raw-score bands that map a section score onto TDN 3, TDN 4 or TDN 5 are not published for every sitting, so this page stores none of them. Instead you enter, on one line per section, the section name, your raw score and the three band minimums from the material you are reading.
How the check works
For each section the raw score is compared with the TDN 5, TDN 4 and TDN 3 minimums in that order, and the first band it reaches becomes that section TDN. A score sitting exactly on a cutoff goes into the higher band. A score under every cutoff is reported as below TDN 3. The overall level is the lowest section TDN, and choosing a target TDN adds the raw points each section still needs plus a list of the sections below it.
What this page does not do
With no built-in chart, it cannot judge anything until the cutoffs are filled in. It does not average the four TDNs into a single grade and it does not forecast a future sitting. Always take the cutoffs from official guidance.
Frequently Asked Questions
The raw-score bands that separate TDN 3, TDN 4 and TDN 5 are not published for every sitting. Putting invented cutoffs in this page would amount to inventing a conversion chart, so it only judges against the cutoffs you copy from your score report or the official guidance.
The higher one. Band cutoffs are normally read as "this score or above", so a raw score equal to the TDN 4 minimum is treated as TDN 4.
A TestDaF score report lists a TDN for each of the four sections, and universities usually ask for a TDN in every section rather than an average. This page therefore reports the lowest section TDN as the overall level and never averages the four.
