Character exam cutoffs come from the exam board, not from a fixed table

Chinese-character proficiency exams are run by several different boards. The level names, the number of characters per level, the maximum score and the pass percentage all differ by board and can change from one sitting to the next. This page therefore stores no cutoff table. Read the maximum score and the pass percentage off the official notice for the exam you are taking, type them in, and the page works only inside the numbers you entered.

How it is calculated

The cutoff is the maximum score multiplied by the pass percentage and divided by 100. A score equal to the cutoff counts as a pass, because notices almost always say "or above". Points still needed are rounded up, on the assumption that scoring is in whole points, while the cutoff and the margin are shown to two decimals.

What this page does not do

It does not tell you how many characters a level covers, and it does not choose a level for you. It does not apply per-section minimums, so an exam that sets a floor for each section cannot be judged from the total alone. For day-to-day study pacing, use the character study progress tracker instead.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a score exactly equal to the cutoff a pass?

Yes, when the notice says "or above". This page treats an equal score as a pass. If your exam says "more than" instead, enter a slightly higher pass percentage.

Why does picking an exam board not fill in the numbers?

Because the levels, maximum scores and pass percentages differ by board and change between sittings. Pre-filling the wrong figure would make the verdict wrong, so the numbers stay as inputs.

Are per-section minimum scores included?

No. Only the total score is checked. If your exam sets a minimum for each section, you need to confirm that part separately on the official notice.
