Spelling dictation levels are not an official system

No board or authority defines levels for spelling dictation. Schools and workbooks each decide that a certain percentage counts as a certain level. This page therefore ships with no bands built in. You enter the four cutoffs from the chart you are actually using, and the verdict stays inside those numbers. When the chart changes, only the numbers change.

How the verdict works

Accuracy is items correct divided by total items. The page walks down from the highest level and takes the first cutoff you meet, and an accuracy exactly equal to a cutoff counts as met. The table shows the items needed for each level, rounded up, so it is obvious that 95% of 20 items means 19 items.

Limits

Only whole items are counted, right or wrong. Scoring that gives partial credit for a word with one wrong letter is not supported, so convert such a score into an item count yourself before entering it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a standard level scale for spelling dictation?

No. It is not an official certification scale, only bands that a school or workbook sets for itself. That is why this page asks you to enter all four cutoffs.

Does an accuracy exactly equal to a cutoff count as that level?

Yes, because a cutoff is read as "or above". With a 95% cutoff on 20 items, 19 correct sits exactly on the boundary and is graded as Level 1.

Can partial credit be given for a word with one wrong letter?

This page does not support partial credit. It counts whole items only, so convert a partial-credit score into an equivalent item count before entering it.
