How to use the degree credit balance calculator

Plenty of students hit the total credit count and still get held back because one requirement area is thin. This page does not count leftover credits; it shows the share of your credits sitting in the major, in general education and in free electives, next to the share the requirements ask for.

The required share is an area requirement divided by the sum of all area requirements. The earned share is the credits you have in that area divided by your total earned credits. The gap between the two shares is shown in percentage points; inside your tolerance it reads as balanced, above it as over-weighted, below it as under-weighted. A gap exactly equal to the tolerance counts as balanced.

Area requirements and tolerance differ from catalog to catalog, so nothing is built in and every figure is entered by you. This page only reads the mix. It does not build a shortfall table by requirement category and it does not plan a term schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Can the mix be balanced and still block graduation?

Yes. The mix only shows how credits are spread, so if your total earned credits fall short of the degree total you still cannot graduate. Check the progress line too.

What tolerance should I enter?

There is no official figure. Catalogs rarely state a share rule, so start around 5 pp and lower it if you want a stricter reading.

Can the area requirements add up to less than the degree total?

Yes. The gap is shown as open credits you may fill in any area. If the areas add up to more than the degree total, the page flags it as an input error.
