How to use the lead conversion rate calculator

When sales results slip, a single overall conversion rate hides the cause. Too few leads, conversations that never reach a proposal, and proposals that never close are three different problems with three different fixes. This calculator takes the counts at four stages, leads, opportunities, proposals and closed deals, and reports the rate and the number dropped at each step.

Two different overall figures are shown on purpose. The overall conversion rate divides closed deals by leads directly. The chained stage rates figure multiplies the three stage percentages exactly as displayed. Rounding for display means the two can differ in the decimals, and each label states which method produced it.

Add closed-won revenue and you also get revenue per lead and revenue per closed deal. Revenue per lead is the practical ceiling on what a lead is worth buying, which makes it useful when setting acquisition budgets. Counts cannot grow as they move down the funnel, so entering a later stage larger than an earlier one returns a message rather than a misleading rate.

Frequently asked questions

Why do the overall rate and the chained stage rates differ slightly?

The overall rate divides closed deals by leads directly. The chained figure multiplies the three stage rates exactly as they appear on screen, and those are rounded to two decimals, so the product lands a hair away from the direct calculation.

Which stage rate should I try to fix first?

Start with the stage that drops the most records. One caveat: heavy loss between lead and opportunity usually points at lead quality or targeting rather than selling skill, which makes it a marketing fix rather than a sales one.
