How to Calculate Wallpaper Quantity

Buying too few rolls means a frustrating mid-project trip back to the store — and the new rolls may not match the dye lot. Buying too many wastes money. A quick calculation before you shop solves both problems.

The Calculation Formula

Wall area = room perimeter (2 × width + length) × ceiling height. Subtract window and door areas, then multiply by (1 + waste factor) to get net area needed. Divide by the area of one roll to get the number of rolls. Round up to the nearest whole roll.

Standard Roll Sizes

US/European standard rolls are typically 20.5 in (52 cm) wide × 33 ft (10 m) long. American double rolls are 66 ft (20 m) long. Asian markets often use 53 cm × 10 m rolls. Always confirm the roll dimensions on the product label, as sizes vary by brand.

Tips for Pattern Matching

Patterned wallpaper has a "pattern repeat" — the vertical distance before the design repeats. Each strip must be cut to align the pattern, wasting the difference. Add the pattern repeat length in cm divided by ceiling height as extra waste percentage (e.g., 64 cm repeat, 240 cm ceiling → add ~27% waste).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I mix rolls from different batches?

Wallpaper is printed in batches and colors can vary slightly between runs. Always buy all rolls at once and from the same batch (check the batch/dye-lot number on each roll). If you need to reorder, you risk a visible color difference at the join.

What tools do I need to hang wallpaper?

You'll need a plumb line or level, a wallpaper brush or squeegee, a seam roller, a sharp utility knife and cutting board, paste (unless using pre-pasted wallpaper), and a large sponge for cleanup. A wallpaper table makes cutting and pasting much easier.

How long does wallpaper last?

Quality wallpaper properly hung on a primed wall can last 10–15 years or more. Vinyl and non-woven wallpapers tend to be more durable and easier to clean than traditional paper. Humidity and sunlight are the main factors shortening lifespan.
