How to Use the Wall R-Value Calculator
In the US, wall insulation performance is usually described by R-value — a material's resistance to heat flow — rather than the U-value (heat transfer rate) more common elsewhere. A higher R-value means better insulation. This calculator lets you enter up to three layers (structural, insulation, and an optional interior finish) with their thickness in inches, and adds up each layer's R-value using standard per-inch values for common building materials.
