A drink inside a thermos gradually cools toward room temperature over time. This calculator applies a simplified version of Newton's law of cooling, where the gap between the starting temperature and ambient temperature shrinks exponentially as time passes.
Larger capacity and higher insulation grade both slow heat loss, which increases the time constant (tau) in the model. Enter the target temperature you consider "still warm enough," and the calculator works backward to estimate how long it takes to cool that far.
For example, water poured in at 194°F in a 68°F room takes a certain number of hours to cool to 104°F — a useful check for how long your coffee stays enjoyable. The same logic works in reverse for cold drinks: set a low starting temperature and a target near room temperature to see how long ice water stays cold. This is a theoretical estimate for a sealed bottle, so opening the lid often will shorten it in practice.
