Stainless Steel Grade Weight Comparison Guide
Select a shape (flat sheet, round bar, or pipe/tube), enter your dimensions, and the calculator displays the weight for grades 201, 304, 316, 430, and 410 in a single comparison table.
Density by Grade
304/304L: 7.93 g/cm³ | 316/316L: 7.98 g/cm³ | 430: 7.70 g/cm³ | 201: 7.80 g/cm³ | 410: 7.75 g/cm³. The difference between 304 and 316 is only 0.6%, but 430 is 2.9% lighter than 304.
Grade Selection Guide
Use 316/316L for marine, chemical processing, and salt environments. 304 is ideal for kitchens, architectural, and general applications. 430 is a ferritic grade with magnetic properties, lower cost, and good heat resistance but weaker corrosion resistance.
Frequently Asked Questions
No — both have the same density of 7.93 g/cm³. The "L" designation only indicates lower carbon content to prevent weld sensitization.
316 is austenitic and generally non-magnetic in the annealed state, though it may become slightly magnetic after cold working. 430 and 410 are ferritic/martensitic and strongly magnetic.
