This calculator takes the one-way distance to your speaker, its impedance, and your amplifier's power to find the minimum wire gauge that keeps signal loss under 5%, then recommends the closest common AWG size.

The calculation uses the round-trip cable length (twice the one-way distance) and standard copper wire resistance per 1,000 feet to find the required gauge, then checks that the current drawn at your amplifier's power doesn't exceed that gauge's safe current rating. Whichever requirement calls for a thicker wire wins, so the recommendation stays safe for higher-power systems too.

For a typical living room setup under 30 ft, 16 AWG is usually enough. For longer runs over 50 ft, such as in a garage or outdoor patio system, 12 AWG or thicker is recommended. Using a thinner cable than recommended increases signal loss and can reduce your amplifier's damping factor, weakening bass control.
