How to Use the Solution Dilution Calculator

Diluting a concentrated stock solution down to a working strength comes up constantly — in labs, cleaning, gardening, and cosmetics. This calculator is based on the C1V1 = C2V2 formula: just enter the stock concentration and the dilution factor (for a 1:10 dilution, enter 10) to get the final concentration instantly. Add your target final volume and it also tells you exactly how much stock solution to measure out and how much water to add.

A larger dilution factor means a lower final concentration. For example, a 10% stock diluted 1:10 gives a 1% final concentration, and if your target final volume is 16 fl oz, that means 1.6 fl oz of stock plus 14.4 fl oz of water. The math relies on the fact that the total amount of the diluted substance doesn't change during dilution.
