How to Use the Photo Print Size Calculator
Enter your image width and height in pixels along with the target DPI. The calculator instantly shows the maximum print size in both inches and centimeters, and checks whether the resolution is sufficient for common print sizes.
What is DPI?
DPI (Dots Per Inch) determines print quality. The higher the DPI, the smaller the maximum print size for the same image. 300 DPI is the standard for photo lab prints. For large format posters viewed from a distance, 150 DPI is perfectly acceptable.
Minimum pixels for common print sizes (300 DPI)
- 4×6 in → at least 1,200 × 1,800 px
- 5×7 in → at least 1,500 × 2,100 px
- 8×10 in → at least 2,400 × 3,000 px
- A4 → at least 2,480 × 3,508 px
Frequently Asked Questions
At 300 DPI, a 12MP image (e.g., 4,032 × 3,024 px) supports prints up to about 13.4 × 10.1 inches — well beyond a standard 8×10 print.
You can still print at lower DPI. For posters viewed from 3+ feet away, 100–150 DPI is fine. The image may appear soft or pixelated when viewed up close.
If pixel counts are equal, the maximum print size is the same. However, DSLR sensors produce less noise, so prints may appear sharper at the same resolution.
