How to Use the Map Scale Calculator
Select your calculation direction, enter the scale denominator (e.g. 25000 for 1:25,000), and input either a map distance or a real-world distance. The result shows the corresponding real or map measurement in multiple units.
Scale Formula
Real distance = Map distance Γ Scale denominator / Map distance = Real distance Γ· Scale denominator
Example: 1:25,000 map, map distance 4 cm β Real = 4 Γ 25,000 = 100,000 cm = 1 km
Common Map Scales
1:5,000 (city detail) / 1:10,000 (urban) / 1:24,000 (USGS) / 1:25,000 (hiking) / 1:50,000 (regional) / 1:250,000 (highway) / 1:1,000,000 (national)
FAQ
USGS 7.5-minute topo maps use 1:24,000 scale. On these maps, 1 inch = 2,000 feet = approximately 610 m. They cover roughly 7.5 Γ 7.5 minutes of latitude/longitude.
Use a ruler or piece of string to measure the distance between two points on the map. Then multiply that measurement by the scale denominator to get the real-world distance.
